When Does Memory Loss Become A Health Issue?

Ever forget where you put your car keys or wallet? Or maybe you forgot the name of the TV show you were just talking about! Forgetfulness is annoying but when does it become something to really worry about?

First things first, it’s important to remember that it is normal to forget things. According to the National Institute on Aging, some forgetfulness is actually a common part of aging and even healthy people can have a forgetful moment. So being forgetful doesn’t always mean there is an underlying cause or issue to worry about but it is important to know what is normal and what isn’t.

Here is a quick look at what is considered normal forgetfulness and when you should talk to your doctor:

What causes forgetfulness?

It can be frustrating when you forget something, especially if it is something important! And while forgetfulness is common with aging, there are also other things that can cause you a brief memory lapse, according to Harvard Health Publishing, including:

  • Lack of sleep. Not getting enough sleep can have major affects on your body, especially your brain. In fact, lack of sleep can affect your short and long-term memory and can also make it difficult to concentrate and stay coordinated.
  • Stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety can make it harder to concentrate and retain new information and skills which can lead to memory issues like forgetfulness. Get more information on how stress can also do harm on other parts of your body here.
  • Depression. Forgetfulness can be a sign of depression or it can be a consequence of it along with other signs like a lack of drive and a stifling sadness.
  • Medications. Some medications like blood pressure drugs or antidepressants can affect memory by causing confusion, drowsiness, or sedation.
  • Alcohol. Consuming too much alcohol can interfere with your short-term memory even after the alcohol has worn off.

When should I worry about my forgetfulness?

While minor memory lapses are common even for the healthiest of people, it is important to pay attention to how frequently you are forgetting things and how severe the memory loss is. Experiencing things like the symptoms mentioned above in the “when to talk to your doctor” section of the table, especially if they are getting worse as you age, can be indications of more serious issues like Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

Having the occasional memory lapse is nothing to stress or worry about but just to be sure, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor about your health and always be aware of your health state.
