Staying Healthy is Easier Than You Think!

Between work, school, and just everyday life, it may almost seem impossible to live a healthier lifestyle. But it turns out, you don’t need to spend hours in the gym or go on an intense diet to be healthy! Here are a few easy ways you can get healthier without any added stress to your daily routine!

Get good sleep!

Though this may seem extremely obvious, many people don’t really realize how important sleep is to your overall health. In fact, adults need 7 or more hours of sleep per night for the best health and wellbeing and those who get less than that are more likely to report being obese, physically inactive, and current smokers. Also, people who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to develop chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease.

Can’t get a full 7 hours of sleep at night? Try taking a nap! Naps can do great things for your health. Find out more here.

Get some good ol’ vitamin D!

Research has shown that not getting enough vitamin D can be the cause of a variety of health problems. It’s not only a powerful health booster, but researchers have also discovered that it’s anti-inflammatory properties may help protect against disease. One study showed that people who got enough vitamin D could have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Whether you add it into your diet with foods like salmon, mushrooms, and egg yolks, or enjoy the “sunshine vitamin” on a beautiful, sunny day, adding vitamin D to your daily routine can be extremely life-changing for your health.

Treat yourself to a little bit of chocolate!

Yes, you read that title correctly! Studies have shown that dark chocolate has health benefits ranging from lowering blood pressure to reducing the risk of heart disease. This deliciously healthy treat is packed with minerals and fiber and contains more antioxidants than fruits like blueberries and acai berries. But, of course, it can only benefit your health if eaten in moderation (so don’t scarf down an entire bag of chocolate in one sitting).

Get a massage!

Sounds too good to be true but there has been research that has shown that massages can be beneficial to your health. One done by the Cedars-Sinai Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences found that after a 45 minute massage, participants showed a significant change in lymphocytes which help fight disease as well as lowered cortisol levels (a stress hormone).

Laugh more!

The list just keeps getting better and better! There are multiple studies that have shown that laughing is good for your health! Laughing can reduce stress, lower your blood pressure, boost your immune system, promote heart health, and is even good for your lungs! In fact, one study showed that 30 minutes of laughing produces similar results to exercise, increasing your heart rate, oxygen consumption, and respiratory rate!

Get some fresh air!

According to founder of the Stress Institute in Atlanta, Kathleen Hall, PhD, fresh air is filled with “feel-good” negative ions that can boost oxygen flow to the brain! And fresh air with a little physical activity like fast-walking, can also boost your endorphins and give you a nice energy boost!

A few other small changes you can make to help you get healthy:

  • Eat from a smaller plate or bowl
  • Increase your fruit and veggie intake
  • Take daily vitamins
  • Swap soda or juice for green tea or fruit infused water
  • Have coffee black instead of mixed with milk or cream
  • Drink water with every meal
  • Eat before you go grocery shopping (this really helps!)
  • Swap processed foods for real foods like eggs, apples, bananas, etc.
  • Take the stairs instead of an elevator
  • Talk to your doctor about your health state

Staying healthy doesn’t have to be rocket science! Making small lifestyle changes can do major things for your health. It is also always good to talk to your doctor about making changes for a healthier lifestyle so you know exactly what you can and cannot do! Talking to your doctor and knowing how healthy you are can help you make the best decisions for your health.
