Is Moscato Bad for Your Health?

You may have heard that red wine can be good for your heart (if consumed in moderation of course) but how healthy is white wine?

What is Moscato?

You may have heard the name “Moscato" before as it has become very popular in this generation. But do you really know what it is? Moscato is an Italian wine that is known for its fruity flavor made from the Muscat grape. Generally categorized as a dessert wine, Moscato has a relatively low alcohol content level, ranging between 5% and 7%.

Is Moscato healthy?

Like the research done with red wine to determine its effects on health, scientists have also studied white wine and how it can affect someone’s health. In their research, scientists have documented that white wine has many of the same health benefits as red wine. Some white wines have even been seen to have higher antioxidant levels than red wine. Antioxidants are important substances that protects your cells against harmful free radicals that can lead to disease.

Other health benefits include:

  • Heart health. Studies have shown that white wine is just as good for your heart as red wine. It has even been stated that drinking white wine, in moderation, can reduce the risk of heart disease by at least 25%.
  • Disease prevention. Like red wine, white wine has been shown to protect against some diseases and forms of cancers. The antioxidants in the wine have been shown to protect cells from breast cancer, bowel cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Weight loss. White wine has less calories than red wine so switching your usual glass of wine from red to white can reduce calorie intake, but it also contains epicatechin, quercetin, and resveratrol; antioxidants that help promote weight loss (again, as long as consumption is moderated).

It is important to remember that, even when drinking light wines like Moscato, you are consuming alcohol and drinking too much can be harmful to your health. The key factors in taking advantage of the health benefits of wine is to moderate your drinking and understanding your health before indulging in a glass.

Understanding your health and knowing how healthy, or unhealthy, your body is can make a big difference in the choices that you make for your health.
