Binge Drinking and Your Health

We all love to celebrate when the new year arrives. In fact, New Year’s celebrations are highly synonymous with drinking champagne and toasting with a glass of your favorite liquor. Though this may sound harmless, there can be serious dangers in drinking too much during your New Year’s Eve party, and a hangover the next morning may be the least of your concerns.

Binge Drinking

Alcohol and the liver do not go well together. The robust organ plays a major role in eliminating toxins from the body. When too much alcohol is consumed the liver will struggle to process the substance, especially when it’s more than the liver can handle at once. As the liver processes alcohol, a substance called Acetaldehyde is created which is damaging to the liver.1

According to the American Addiction Centers, binge drinking is the consumption of a significant amount of alcohol in a single setting; five or more drinks for men and four more or more drinks for women.2 Though these many drinks may sound harmless to some it can be quite dangerous. Drinking an excessive amount of alcohol can lead to serious health concerns.

In a recent study, scientists discovered that binge drinking led to early stage liver disease in a short time period. Liver disease is typically slow developing but binge drinking may speed up the process. The study also revealed that binge drinking increased the levels of alcohol-metabolizing enzymes, which can produce oxidative damage and other forms of harm to the liver.3 Binge drinking rates are also continuing to rise among young adults.

Safe Alcohol Consumption

While 'no alcohol' is the safest option for your health, it is understandable where some people may want to enjoy an adult beverage from time-to-time, especially during a New Year’s celebration. If you would like to enjoy an alcoholic beverage here are a few measures to take for safe consumption:

  • Drink in moderation - avoid drinking more than 4 drinks in a 2-hour time period.
  • Stay hydrated - alcohol dehydrates the body, which causes the hangover symptoms the next morning. Water also aids in the detoxification of your body.
  • Try lighter options - instead of downing a round of shots, try sipping on a drink 'on the rocks.' These types of drinks usually take longer to consume which allows your body to process the alcohol.
  • Drink responsibly - it is important to know your limits and when to stop drinking.

Celebrating the new year is a time to be happy, make great memories, and bring the new year in with positivity and joy, and enjoying a good 'Cheers' can be fun. This New Year’s Eve, laugh, have fun, and cheers to new beginnings but don't forget your health in the process.
