Alcohol 101: Statistics You Should Know

Enjoying an alcoholic beverage is known as a common “right-of-passage” once you hit the age of 21. But while it may seem fun to enjoy the occasional drink, too much can be harmful to your health. Here are a few things you should know about alcohol.

Standard Drink

A standard drink in the U.S. contains approximately 14 grams, or 0.6 fluid ounces, of pure alcohol in it. This can mean different drink sizes depending on the type of drink you have. For instance, one regular 12-ounce bottle of beer usually is 5% alcohol while a 5-ounce glass of wine is 12% alcohol. Even though they are different sized drinks, both are a standard drink.

Moderate Vs Excessive Drinking

If indulging in an alcoholic beverage, it is important to understand the difference between moderate drinking and excessive drinking. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, moderate drinking is considered to be one standard drink per day for women and two standard drinks per day for men.

Excessive drinking can be categorized in two ways: binge drinking and heavy drinking. While they may sound the same, binge drinking is four or more drinks for women and 5 or more drinks for men within a two-hour time period. Heavy drinking, on the other hand, is eight or more drinks a week for women and 15 or more drinks a week for men. Excessive drinking can lead to serious health problems and increase the risk of chronic diseases.

Health Risks

Alcohol consumption can have an immediate impact on your health. It can damage more than just the liver. In fact, alcohol consumption has been linked to damage to the liver, brain, heart, stomach, immune system, and kidneys.

Even if you are not a heavy drinker, consuming alcohol can have short-term effects as well. One bout of binge drinking can impair your vision, impair your judgement, cause risky behavior, and can even cause alcohol poisoning. Long-term, excessive alcohol use can lead to other serious issues like:

  • Alcoholism
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Learning and memory problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease
  • Heart disease
  • Cancers including cancer in the liver, colon, mouth, throat, and esophagus.

The best way to avoid the health risks associated with alcohol consumption is to avoid it all together. If it is unavoidable or you simply would like to enjoy an occasional drink, just remember to drink in moderation and know how much alcohol you are consuming. It is also important to know if there may be any reasons that you shouldn’t drink like health concerns.
