10 Tips for A Healthy Summer

Summertime is a fun time to enjoy some sunshine and get the most out of the longer days. But while you are having some fun in the sun it is important not to forget about your health! Here are a few tips to help you stay healthy in the summer!

  1. Stay cool. It can get very hot during the summer and it is vital to your health that you keep your body cool. Overheating can be dangerous for your entire body. While outside, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes, and wear sun protection like sun block and hats.
  2. Stay hydrated. Drinking water, especially in the hot weather, is extremely important. Staying hydrated can help prevent you from overheating or getting dehydrated. Try to carry water with you wherever you go for easy access.
  3. Stay protected from mosquitos. Mosquitos are everywhere in the summer months! They aren’t just pesky, they can be dangerous too and spread viruses like Zika, Malaria, and West Nile Virus. Use insect repellant when going out and be sure to clear standing water and fix broken screens at home.
  4. Stay active. You may shy away from your exercise routine because of the heat but instead of ditching your workout, change the hours that you are active. Try to exercise early in the morning or at night when it is cooler and outside of peak heat and humidity hours.
  5. Eat berries. Add some extra berries to your diet during the summer for an added boost in antioxidants. Antioxidants can help prevent damage to tissues, prevent some cancers, keep cholesterol low, and are filled with fiber.
  6. Choose lite alcohol. If you indulge in alcohol during the summer, try to choose lite options over hard alcohol. The heat can heighten the effects that alcohol has on your body like having poor balance, coordination, and judgment.
  7. Get sleep. You may be tempted to stay up longer during the extended summer days, but it is important to get good sleep. Not getting enough sleep can negatively impact your health. In fact, according to the National Sleep Foundation, when you don’t get enough sleep, you are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease.
  8. Stay disconnected. Summertime is a great time to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather. Relaxing and getting fresh air can help de-stress and rejuvenate your body and mind. Part of this process includes putting your electronics down and giving yourself a break from technology.
  9. Stay shady. Keep your sunglasses handy while you are outside. It is important to protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays just like you protect the rest of your body!
