Worst Alcohol for Your Health

There are numerous reasons why alcohol can be damaging to your health. When dealing with your health, some alcohol may be worse than others. While removing alcohol completely from your diet may be the best option to prevent healthy complications, drinking in moderation can also be a preventative measure if you know exactly what type of alcohol you are consuming.

Beer

Though it is a typical favorite for most drinkers, beer is one of the worst options of alcohol for, not just your liver, but your overall health. Beer has a lot of calories which causes weight gain when you drink too much of it. Maintaining a healthy weight is vital to ensuring your liver is functioning properly.

Sugary Cocktails and Fruity Drinks

While they might be pleasing to your taste buds, sugar-filled drinks are also one of the worst alcoholic beverages to enjoy. Besides being filled with alcohol, these drinks are also filled with an unhealthy amount of sugar. The extra sugar is no good for your weight because of all the calories. In fact, a Long Island Iced Tea has more calories than an order of McDonald’s fries!

Too much sugar from these sweet cocktails also increases your chance of developing type II diabetes and since your liver is too busy processing the alcohol, your body stores the sugar as fat until it can process it another later.

Alternative Options

Certain drinks, if enjoyed in moderation, are better choices:

  • Wine – Since red wine doesn’t contain wheat, it will not make you feel bloated and it contains tanins which are good for your liver if consumption is moderated. White wine is also a better choice because it has fewer calories than red wine and less sugar.
  • Tequila (on the rocks) – Tequila is somewhat of a strong alcohol, but it has no carbohydrates. To make it a better option, it is best to enjoy it slowly (no shots!).
  • Vodka and Seltzer – Seltzer has no added sugar, unlike tonic water used in a vodka tonic. The lack of additional sugar is what makes this a healthier beverage option for your liver.
  • Light beer – If you have a strong urge to enjoy a beer, choose a light lager. Light beers typically contain fewer calories and sugars.

There may be healthier options of alcoholic beverages, but it is important to remember that high amounts of any type of alcohol can be harmful to your body. Still not sure which choice may be right for you? Start with understanding your health and learn just how healthy you are.
