Why Mardi Gras Is Bad for Your Health

When you think of Mardi Gras you probably think of lots of music, lots of food, and lots of alcohol! And while it may be fun to join in on the annual celebration, it's important to understand how it could also be harmful towards your health.

Mardi Gras may not be a national holiday but it is one of the biggest celebrations of the year in New Orleans. In fact, New Orleans has about 3,000 bars that plan for this one event all throughout the year. 3,000 bars mean lots and lots of alcohol. And with the average attendance reaching about 1.4 million people, Mardi Gras is easily one of the biggest “drinking" celebrations of the year.

In a survey done by Alcohol.org, Americans consume an average of 4.5 alcoholic beverages on Fat Tuesday. Though this may not sound like much, New Orleans signature drink like the Hurricane is packed with alcohol and sugar which is not a great combination for your overall health, especially if consumed excessively.

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, moderate alcohol consumption is considered to be one drink containing 0.6 ounces of alcohol per day for women and two drinks per day for men. One Hurricane cocktail alone contains 4 ounces of alcohol.

Consuming an excessive amount of alcohol can lead to serious health concerns including causing damage to the brain, heart, pancreas, immune system, and liver. Research has actually shown that  binge drinking can lead to early stage liver disease in a short time period and  increase the levels of alcohol-metabolizing enzymes, which can produce oxidative damage and other forms of harm to the liver.


Food

Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) didn’t get its name without few signature dishes. But, as delicious as these dishes are, they can also be harmful to your health. While dishes like king's cake and gumbo aren’t the healthiest food choices, over-indulging can be the biggest issue where it concerns the food you enjoy in Mardi Gras.

A study showed that over-eating with a lack of exercise can have lasting, negative effects on health including obesity and an increased risk of heart issues.

If you plan on joining the celebration this year, here are a few tips to help you stay healthy in your Mardi Gras journey:

  • Avoid binge eating by drinking a glass of water before every meal. Doing this will help you feel full so as to avoid over-eating to satisfy your hunger.
  • Avoid binge drinking by choosing lighter drink options that don't contain a high calorie count or alcohol level like a Vodka Tonic or wine.
  • Eat a healthy, hardy breakfast before enjoying the celebration, this will it less likely to want to continuously snack if you don't feel hungry.
  • Take your time and enjoy your food.
  • Don’t eat for the sake of eating. Instead of trying to eat everything you come across during Mardi Gras, pace yourself and listen to your body to know when you are full.
  • Stay active during the big celebration. If you are going to be taking in calories from food and alcohol, staying active can help you burn off calories.

Mardi Gras is a huge celebration and can be very memorable but it is also important to remember that it can also be harmful to your health if you don’t manage your alcohol and food intake. The best way to enjoy your time in New Orleans without compromising your health is to plan ahead.

Before your trip, plan your routes, the restaurants or bars you will be visiting, and most importantly, know your health. Understanding your health can give you a better idea of what to enjoy and what to avoid during your fun.
